Sewer pipeline rehabilitation in Città Alta (Bergamo) using CIPP technology

We carried out a pipe rehabilitation project in the heart of Città Alta (Bergamo), using CIPP lining (relining with liner), an ideal technology for operating in complex urban environments of historical value. The activity of Franchini Servizi Ecologici involved a sewer pipeline located in the historic center, where it is essential to intervene in a non-invasive way, minimizing the impact on infrastructure and traffic.

The context: a delicate intervention in a historic center

The intervention took place in the historic center of Bergamo Alta, an area characterized by limited access, logistical constraints, and confined, restricted spaces. For this reason, trenchless pipe rehabilitation represents the most effective solution, allowing work to be carried out from inside the pipeline without invasive operations.

The stages of pipe rehabilitation

1. Hydrodynamic cleaning of the pipeline

The intervention began with high-pressure cleaning, carried out using a vacuum truck, to remove scale and deposits. This activity is essential to prepare the pipeline for the subsequent CIPP lining process.

2. Flow management and temporary bypass

To work safely, an inflatable pipe plug was installed upstream of the affected section, preventing the flow of wastewater. The water was diverted through a bypass system, ensuring service continuity.

3. CIPP lining: the rehabilitation phase

The core of the intervention was CIPP lining (relining with liner), a pipe rehabilitation technique that allows a new pipe to be created inside the existing one. The process included:

  • impregnation of the liner with specific resins
  • insertion into the pipe through inversion
  • inflation using hot water to ensure adhesion to the walls
  • controlled curing of the material

This technology, also known as CIPP, allows for rapid intervention without excavation.

4. Finishing and reopening of connections

After the liner curing:

  • the ends were finished
  • lateral connections were reopened through robotic milling

This ensures full restoration of the network functionality.

5. Final inspection with CCTV survey

The rehabilitation concluded with a CCTV inspection, confirming the successful completion of the work and the continuity of the new pipeline.

The advantages of pipe rehabilitation with CIPP lining

This intervention made it possible to:

  • carry out trenchless pipe rehabilitation
  • reduce operational time and costs
  • avoid disruption in a historic area
  • achieve a durable and reliable solution
